The Most Challenge: What Is POM Valve Body Parts CNC Machining Manufacturing?

Both PC base and POM valve body need to be assembled with other parts and electronic devices to make the whole flow circuit work. The whole device is suitable for medical applications — environmentally friendly, rigid, and insulative. Most of the time, we consider injection molding; however, for verified rapid prototypes and low-volume production, we use vacuum casting and CNC milling to save time and cost.

The main challenge is that the big valve body features multiple runners — including straight and inclined holes. POM material is very easy to deform. The six holes (top and bottom) are not in a straight line, yet all holes must connect. The top hole size is 8mm, the bottom hole size is 6mm, and there are 6 inclined holes. We must rotate to 5 different positions for machining.

How to Develop and Machine the Complex POM Valve Body Parts?

All medical parts require raw materials that comply with RoHS and FDA certification. Electronic medical devices often require PC or POM materials due to their superior weight and performance compared to metal.

All plastic materials are sourced from PMMA and POM, with a few components from 6082 aluminum.

    • Used 3D printing to test and verify part features prior to CNC machining.
    • Applied 3D simulation of the machining process to reduce risk.
    • Established an after-machining process including polishing and cleaning.
    • Set up a rigorous machining process and inspection standard.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What materials are used for POM Valve Body CNC machining?
The primary materials used are POM (Polyoxymethylene) and PMMA (Acrylic). In some cases, 6082 aluminum is also used for specific structural components. All materials comply with RoHS and FDA certification requirements for medical device applications.
What tolerance can you achieve for POM and PMMA CNC machined parts?
Our high-precision 5-axis CNC machining centers can achieve a tolerance of ±0.02mm, ensuring tight fits and reliable assembly for complex valve body and connector components.
Why is POM material challenging to machine for valve body parts?
POM material is prone to deformation during machining. For valve bodies with multiple runners — including straight and inclined holes that must all interconnect — precise multi-axis positioning is critical. We use 5-axis CNC centers and rotate parts to 5 different positions to achieve the required accuracy.
How do you verify the design before full CNC machining production?
We use 3D printing to create rapid prototypes for functional verification, followed by 3D simulation of the machining process to identify and reduce risks before committing to full CNC machining production.
What finishing options are available for PMMA and POM machined parts?
We offer a range of secondary finishing processes including polishing (for PMMA transparency), anodizing, powder coating, painting, Alodine, and PTFE coating, depending on the application requirements.
What is the typical lead time and minimum order quantity for POM Valve Body CNC machining?
For this project, the lead time was 12 days for 50 sets. Lead times may vary depending on part complexity, quantity, and finishing requirements. We support both rapid prototype orders and low-volume production runs — contact us for a custom quote.
