The Most Challenge in POM Valve Body Parts CNC Machining Manufacturing

Both PC base and POM valve body need to be assembled with other parts and electronic devices to make the whole fluid circuit work. The whole device is suitable for medical applications, meeting environmental protection requirements, with rigidity and insulative properties. Most of the time, we have to consider injection molding; however, when verifying rapid prototypes and low-volume production, we consider vacuum casting and CNC milling processes to save time and cost.

⚠️ Key Machining Challenge: The big valve body features multiple runners, including straight and inclined holes. POM material is very easy to deform. The six holes (top and bottom) are not in a straight line, yet all holes must be connected and allow flow. The upper hole size is 8mm, the lower hole size is 6mm, and there are 6 inclined holes — requiring rotation to 5 different positions during machining.

How to Develop and Machine the Complex POM Valve Body Parts?

All medical parts require raw materials that comply with RoHS and FDA certification. Some electronic medical devices require PC or POM material components due to their weight advantages and material performance being superior to metal. All plastic materials are sourced from PMMA and POM, with a few components made from 6082 aluminum.

    • Used 3D printing to test and verify part features before CNC machining
    • Applied 3D program simulation of the machining process to reduce risk
    • Set up after-machining processes including polishing and cleaning
    • Established a rigorous machining process and inspection standard
    • All materials comply with RoHS and FDA certification requirements
    • Materials include PMMA, POM, and 6082 aluminum as needed

    Frequently Asked Questions
What materials are used for POM Valve Body CNC machining?
The primary materials used are PMMA (Polymethyl Methacrylate) and POM (Polyoxymethylene). In some cases, 6082 aluminum is also used for specific components. All materials comply with RoHS and FDA certification requirements for medical-grade applications.
What is the dimensional tolerance achievable for POM Valve Body parts?
Our high-precision 5-axis CNC machining centers and CNC lathes can achieve a tolerance of ±0.02mm, ensuring tight-fitting assemblies and reliable fluid circulation performance for medical device applications.
Why is CNC machining preferred over injection molding for POM Valve Body prototypes?
For rapid prototyping and low-volume production, CNC machining (along with vacuum casting) offers significant advantages in lead time and cost compared to injection molding. It allows design verification and functional testing before committing to expensive tooling.
How do you handle the deformation risk of POM material during machining?
POM is prone to deformation due to its internal stress characteristics. We use 3D program simulation to plan the machining sequence, apply proper fixturing strategies, and rotate the part to 5 different positions to machine all inclined and straight holes accurately while minimizing deformation risk.
What finishing processes are available for PMMA and POM machined parts?
We offer a range of secondary finishing processes including polishing (to achieve PMMA transparency), cleaning, anodizing, powder coating, painting, Alodine, and PTFE coating. The specific process is selected based on the part's functional and aesthetic requirements.
What is the typical lead time and minimum order quantity for POM Valve Body CNC machining?
For this project, a batch of 50 sets was completed within 12 days. Lead times and minimum order quantities may vary depending on part complexity, material availability, and machining requirements. We support both rapid prototype (single pieces) and low-volume production runs. Please contact us for a tailored quote.
