What's The Project Challenge For The Projects?
The main challenge is that the product features are very complex — we need to machine these surfaces one by one, and all parts must be assembled and function as intended. The materials themselves are very hard and not easy to machine. The single part special dimensional tolerance is under 0.01mm, requiring all parts to be assembled and fully functional.
Our engineering team uses extended cutting tools, 5-axis and 3+2 axis CNC milling machines to complete them. The parts include multi-angle holes (25 holes distributed in 10 different angles), microchannels (width of only 100 μm), and thin-walled structures (thickness of 0.55 mm). Five holes are undercut, with a series of grooves along the tapered holes requiring accurate concentricity and tolerance control.
Thin-walled parts are prone to deformation due to cutting force or clamping force. Flexible vise clamping and staged processing (coarse / semi-finish / finish machining carried out in stages) are required. Through process optimization, the deformation rate is reduced from 5% to below 0.3%.
Full lifecycle data recording is required, including material batches, processing parameters, and test reports, to meet medical standards such as ISO 13485.
Customers often demand competitive prices including material and machining process. Creatingtec offers tailored suggestions to customers for review. High-precision processing takes a long time (e.g., total processing time for bone plates reaching 1 hour and 11 minutes), and efficiency is improved through automation such as double workstation systems.
How To Understand and Make The Parts?
First, we conducted a careful design overview to understand the parts and suggest improvements when possible. Then, we applied Positive Material Identification (PMI) to test the composition of the alloys used in the tools and parts.
🔧 Fabricating The Prototypes
The first run of prototypes was CNC machined from aluminum in a 5-step process:
- CNC Program the Machines
- Engineering Review and Improve the Codes
- Mount the Workpiece on the Machine and Adjust the Setup
- Monitor Production and All Functions
- Adjust the Cutting Programs When Necessary
CNC milling process: the mainstream technology achieves complex surface shaping through 5-axis linkage for the curved surface finishing of the actuating support, requiring a 3mm tool.
Using the mirror EDM process for minor undercut features, as CNC milling cannot access these areas.
Surface polishing is performed to meet the whole product assembly and appearance requirements.
Titanium alloy and stainless steel parts require sonicleaning after machining.
How To Develop and Manufacturing CNC Machining Medical Device Parts
Most medical device parts CNC machining includes rapid prototyping and volume production. When making 2–4 prototypes, we consider using 5-axis CNC machines and turn-mill combination to manufacture them, followed by after-machining finishing processes.
Medical device parts require us to consider the whole process — from single part machining, surface coating, to assembly — making it a very complex process.
When you have medical device parts CNC machining inquiries or customized parts needs, you can send your inquiry to our engineering team who will discuss each production detail with you. Whatever you need — 1 pc or more than 100 pcs — we will provide the best cost-effective support. Tell us your requirements or expectations, and our team will make it happen. You can start a new project now.
What's The Surface Finishing Can Be Done After CNC Machining?
After most medical device parts are CNC machined, we provide high-quality finishing options:
For Actuating Device parts, after CNC milling, turning, and EDM process, we perform polishing and sonicleaning to achieve an aesthetic and functional finish.
